The Groodle

A recent addition to the designer dog crossbreds, Groodles are a cross between a Golden Retriever and Poodle. They are sometimes called Goldendoodles, and are similar in physical appearance and temperament to the Labradoodle which was one of the first designer dog breeds. Most of our Groodles are low to non-shedding making them ideal for allergy sufferers or those who don’t want hair all over the house.

Groodles were first bred in North America emerging as an alternative to the Labradoodle and Spoodle. Although originally bred as a Standard size, Groodle breeders now breed the Miniature, Medium as well as the Standard sized Groodles. Due to their low-shedding, low dander coats and friendly and high intelligence, Groodles are quickly becoming Australia’s favourite designer breeds.

Golden Retrievers and Poodles are intelligent breeds which are easy to train and these are traits which are passed onto a well bred Groodle. Multi-Generation Groodle breeders have also introduced the Multi) Generation Labradoodle genetics into their breeding programs to produce certain colours and desirable traits.

In regards to their temperament, Groodles are very similar to the Golden Retriever. Loyal, eager to please, Groodles make excellent family dogs. They are often described as “gentle” with an easy going nature.

Groodles can make good working dogs and have been used as guide dogs, assistance dogs, sniffer dogs and even therapy dogs.

The Groodle is the “classic” family dog. They are playful, well mannered, intelligent, obedient, excellent with kids and kind to strangers. Although they can actually make good watch dogs they love people too much to make good guard dogs. Like the Golden Retriever we are now starting to see Groodles at the top of their obedience classes.

Groodles are easy to train due to them being so eager to please so will do just about anything for some praise and a tasty reward. This helps the first time dog owner. They are sensitive so a gentle approach to training is best. The Groodle train-ability has made them one of Australia’s most popular dogs.

GroodlesAlthough Groodles are known for their even temperament and loyalty, potential owners should be aware of indiscriminate breeders and puppy farms that due to the breeds popularity has lead to some puppies being bred with unstable temperaments and health problems. We have developed long and trusting relationships with all of our breeders and we are confident in their breeding programs.

When it comes to grooming your Groodle there are a few things that need to be considered. The coat type for example is it a non-shedding wool or fleece coat or is it a first cross Groodle with a hair coat? And how long would you like the coat to be kept? Flat hair coats shed but are easy to care for. Wool coats may not shed at all but will require more clipping. All most all of our Groodles are Mulit-Generation Groodles with non to very low shedding coats so most of our puppies new owners clip their dogs once very 2 or 3 months making their coat quite easy to maintain, however if you prefer to keep the coat very long your Groodle will require regular brushing to keep it matt free.
Groodles can come in a range of colours including shades of red, brown/chocolate, cream, black, silver apricot, party colour and white.
