What type of dog is a Cavoodle? A Cavoodle is a deliberate cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle (either Toy which is the smallest or a Miniature Poodle). Purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known to be one of the most placid breeds with the sweetest natures of all the purebreds. They are gentle, have no interested in the family (or pack) pecking order so they are incredibly safe around children. The down side to the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is that unfortunately they’re really known to be the most intelligent of all the breeds out there and they do shed…a lot! The Poodle on the other hand has more “spark” when is comes to their personality and they are one of the most intelligent breeds that love people. The other big plus is that Poodles don’t shed and have a low dander coat for this who are allergic to dog dander. By crossing the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a Poodle, the aim is to get the best from both breeds. So a Cavoodle will typically have a very soft and gentle nature similar to a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with the intelligent nature of the Poodle and low to none-shedding coat from the Poodle.
Cavoodles have become one of Australia’s most popular family dogs because they’ve proven themselves as highly adaptable, excellent around kids and other pets and just all-round easy to be around type of dog. Cavoodle owners are so happy with them that they’ve been telling all their friends and family just what a wonderful breed the Cavoodle. This has led to their popularity growth over the past 9 or 10 years.

Unfortunately due to their popularity, some unscrupulous breeders (i.e. backyard breeders and puppy farms) have begun to breed Cavoodles as well. It’s important that if you decide to purchase a Cavoodle puppy, make sure the breeder is a registered breeder. A registered breeder should be able to provide you with a DOMESTIC ANIMAL BUSINESS NUMBER. This ensures that the breeder must provide you with a health guarantee, the puppies are ethically bred and raised, the breeder is complying with the Code of Practice for Dog Breeding and Rearing and that they undergo regular inspections by their local authority.
