What is a Beaglier? Well, a Beaglier which is sometimes spelt Beagalier is a cross between a Beagle and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and although either breed can be the father or mother since both breeds are a similar size most Beaglier breeders choose the Beagle as the mother. We first began to see Beagliers about 10 years ago due to Australian families wanting a dog that wasn’t large or too small, didn’t require a lot of maintenance and wouldn’t suffer from too many health issues. The Beaglier has rapidly grown in popularity due to its excellent reputation as an all round good family dog.
Beagliers grow to be approximately 35cm at the shoulder and about 6kg-12kg in weight. Large enough to put up with what children tend to do to dogs while still small enough to enure they don’t bowl smaller children off their feet like other breeds such as Labradors or Golden Retrievers. Beagliers are similar in appearance to the purebred Beagle however Beagliers have smaller softer feature with larger eyes and a short muzzle giving them an almost eternal puppy type face and expression. When compared to the purebred Beagle, Beagliers are not only softer in appearance but also softer in nature. They don’t have a strong drive to follow their nose like the Beagle since the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel lacks this drive. In fact the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel probably has the most placid temperament when compared to just about any other purebred. This has given the Beaglier the easy going attitude of the Beagle with the soft and sweet nature of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
Beagliers can come in a range of different colour which include Tri Colour, Tan and White, Red, Red and White and Black and Tan. All of our Beagliers are first generation Beagliers which means they almost always have the short coat of the Beagle however the hair is slightly softer. Beagliers only require the occasional brush once or twice a week to remove any dead hair but most Beaglier owners report brushing is not absolutely necessary.
The Beaglier is a small breed that can live in an apartment or unit provided they are well trained and given the opportunity to exercise. They do exceptionally well in family homes with children and other pets. A daily walk is ideal. Beagliers are happiest being part of the family so the more time you can spend with your Beaglier the better!
In terms of health Beagliers really are incredibly robust and healthy provided they are not allowed to become overweight. It is important to ensure breeders are health testing for P.R.A. Unfortuatley due to the Beagliers popularity they attracted unscrupulous backyard breeders and puppy farms leading to some Beagliers with poor health and behaviour issues. Chevromist Kennels has worked with our breeders for many years and has full confidence in their breeding programs and the puppies they breed. In fact we receive reference from new owners almost daily reinforcing our complete confidence in our breeders and their breeding programs. We see very little common health issues when it come to the Cavoodle. We encourage all of our breeders to include P.R.A. testing in their breeding programs to ensure it does not become a problem in the breed in the future.
